Visas and Permits

Do You Need a Visa?

  • If you are a citizen of one of the European Union countriesyou do not need a visa to study in Lithuania.

  • If you are not a citizen of the European Unionyou must follow the legal procedure to obtain the necessary documents for long-term stay in Lithuania.

Who Is Responsible?

Since July 2023, the institution responsible for all long-term stay procedures for foreigners (including students) is the Migration Department under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania.

Please note: Lithuanian embassies and consulates abroad no longer accept applications for national (D) visas.
For accurate and up-to-date information, please refer to the Migration Department.

What Kind of Documents Will You Need?

In order to study in Lithuania as a non-EU citizen, you will need the following:

Temporary Residence Permit (TRP)

This is the main document allowing a foreign national to live and study in Lithuania for a longer period. You must apply for the Temporary Residence Permit before your arrival to Lithuania, via the Lithuanian Migration Information System (MIGRIS).

National Visa (D) – only if applicable

If your Temporary Residence Permit is not issued before your planned arrival, you may be eligible to apply for a National Visa (D) in order to enter Lithuania and wait for your TRP decision while already in the country.

⚠️ Important: Please note that the National Visa (D) is now issued only by the Migration Department, not at embassies. For eligibility and application process, consult https://migracija.lrv.lt/en/.

How to Apply?

  • All applications are submitted online through the MIGRIS system.

  • After completing the application online, you will need to book an appointment at the nearest Migration Department office (if you are in Lithuania) or a designated external service provider (if abroad).

  • If there is no Lithuanian visa service in your country, you may need to apply in another country where Lithuania is represented.
