Programme overview
Providing people with quality, safe, and healthy food daily is one of the most important global challenges that food scientists and technologists are facing today. Food Science and Nutrition master’s study programme provides students with knowledge and skills to develop innovative food technologies based on the principles of the bioeconomy and healthy nutrition, and to manage food quality and safety projects. Students gain hands-on experience while working in modern food technology labs, which are equipped with pilot-scale technological lines, and conducting research in state-of-the-art laboratories. Food Science and Nutrition is an internationally recognised master’s programme accredited with the ASIIN Seal and the EQAS Food Quality Label. Graduates can pursue careers in food production, quality and safety management, food innovation group management, food business development, consultancy, or continue their academic journey in PhD studies.

Programme Structure
Food Science and Nutrition programme at KTU combines advanced knowledge in food chemistry, microbiology, technology, safety, and nutrition with practical, research-based learning. This programme provides students with:
- communication, presentation, creative, and critical thinking skills for problem-solving and teamwork;
- knowledge in advanced food chemistry and analysis, microbiology, technology, safety, and nutrition for the development of future food technologies;
- practical technological and laboratory skills, including working with pilot-scale technological lines and state-of-the-art laboratory equipment for bioactive compound isolation, chromatography and mass spectrometry, microbiology, food digestibility, rheology, and structural studies;
- hands-on research experience in scientific laboratories.
The programme offers flexible learning pathways, including interdisciplinary and field-expert competencies, as well as broad exchange possibilities.
Admission requirements
Funding opportunities
All international students automatically become candidates to receive the Scholarship for International Students, which is assigned for first-year Bachelor or Master students with strong academic records and motivation.
The residents of European Union countries and the global citizens of Lithuanian origin can apply for state-funded study places. This means that all the applicants, who fall into one of the aforementioned categories, will participate in the general admission’s competition for state-funded study places and get the chance to study free of charge, depending on their admission score.

Campus life
The main KTU Campus is within walking distance from the city centre. In the campus, university sports halls and courts, dormitories, shops and recreational areas are all nearby. KTU boasts the active student community, with 6 art societies and over 20 students’ organisations. Our students can choose from 100 weekly sports classes, and join one of 20 sports teams. All of this is free of charge.
Over 40 thousand students study in Kaunas, and of these, around 10% are international students. Lush parks, lively squares, cosy cafes and buzzing cultural life make Kaunas attractive not only as a travel destination but also as a place to live.
