Lithuanian University of Health Sciences

The present-day Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (Lietuvos sveikatos mokslų universtetas, LSMU) is is the largest institution of higher education for biomedical sciences in Lithuania, successfully integrating studies, research, and clinical practice. LSMU consists of two main academies: Medical Academy and Veterinary Academy .

Facts and Figures
LSMU is a public university in the Republic of Lithuania. The Senate, which is elected by scientists from all subdivisions of the university, is its governing body.
The university includes 7 faculties (Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Odontology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Faculty of Animal Husbandry Technology), 6 research institutes, and two animal clinics and the Hospital of LSMU.
Today, LSMU is the country’s largest specialized health education institution with 21,000 members and staff, including over 8,000 students, which offers university degrees, training and research in biomedical sciences.

Practical Skills Are Highly Valued
Students of medicine, odontology (dentistry) and nursing hone their practical skills at the Hospital of LSMU, which is the largest medical institution in the Baltic countries. More than 1,200 highly qualified doctors and 2,400 members of the nursing staff care for over 78,000 patients at the University’s Hospital each year. The entire medical staff values innovative and progressive methods of treatment and diagnostics, which meet global standards.
Pharmacy students gain practical skills at the University’s Pharmacy, which is designed not only to serve the public, but also to be the main training facility of the Faculty of Pharmacy, offering students a broad spectrum of practical knowledge and skills, and providing them with first-hand working experience.
Students seeking to become veterinary doctors obtain their practical skills in large and small animal clinics and operating rooms of the Veterinary Academy, which is housed within a walking distance of the Kaunas city centre on a peaceful campus. Strong academic traditions, experience, modern facilities and a comfortable study environment are combined to provide the best possible education in veterinary sciences.

International Experience and Recognition
LSMU collaborates with more than 140 European, American and Asian universities for study and research purposes.
The University is a member of numerous international organizations, such as the European University Association (EUA), The Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER), The Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE), Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE), Baltic Sea Region University Network (BSRUN), Organisation for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System (ORPHEUS), European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE), World Veterinary Association, and more. LSMU is also a member of the World Health Organization, where it fulfils the role of a collaboration centre for research and training in epidemiology, as well as for the prevention of cardiovascular and other chronic non-communicable diseases.
The study programmes at LSMU meet university education standards applied in the EU countries, and graduates are eligible to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and PLAB examination of the General Medicine Council in the UK.

A Choice for International Students
Since 1990, the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences has been the Alma Mater of many international students, and over 1600 full-time foreign students from 88 countries (mainly Israel, Sweden, Germany, India, Lebanon, Spain, Poland, South Korea, Ireland and the United Kingdom) are currently enrolled here.
The number of studying internationally is increasing every year. International Erasmus students choosing to study at LSMU are mostly from Spain, Italy, France, Turkey and the Czech Republic.

Innovative Environment
The University’s Library and Information Centre contains one of the most modern libraries in the EU, and it is listed in the Book of the Most Modern European Libraries published by the LIBER architecture group. The library has both virtual and RFID technologies and is very popular among foreign countries for its unique architecture and information systems.
Brachytherapy, a modern method of treating oncological diseases such as prostate cancer, is successfully applied at the Hospital of LSMU – the only facility in Lithuania where lung transplantations and very complicated heart and lung surgeries are performed.
LSMU participates in the development of projects that result in new technologies, augmented scientific research and development, and renewed and modernized University infrastructure:  a new Faculty of Nursing is presently under construction.

Vytautas Magnus University

 

Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) is a public university established in 1922. VMU is the only public higher education institution in Lithuania and one of the few in the region where a comprehensive liberal arts education is imparted. Students can change and organize their schedule freely, minor in one field and major in another, travel abroad on international exchange, and get ready for those trips by taking some of the available 30 foreign language courses.
