Linguistics (Baltic Linguistics)

The specialisation of Baltic Linguistics is the only study programme of its kind designed to train highly qualified specialists in Baltic Linguistics who are versed in the fields of synchronic and diachronic Baltic Linguistics, interdisciplinary research methods and methodological strategies, able to analyse, evaluate, solve theoretical and practical problems related to the concepts of languages and society, education, changing cultural and social identity. Students specialising in Baltic linguistics will gain knowledge about the Lithuanian, Latvian, and Prussian languages, sources, the development of Baltic languages in the context of the development of other Indo-European languages, and their relationship with other languages of this area. They will be able to evaluate the conducted and ongoing research in Baltic linguistics and their importance, will acquire the skills and experience to apply modern technologies when working with the material of the Baltic languages.

Graduates of the specialisation of Baltic Linguistics, who went to study abroad in the third semester and fulfilled the requirements of a foreign university, have the opportunity to get a double diploma (and, at the same time, of the University of Latvia).

Preparatory English Language Course B2

Preparatory English Language Courses B2 are designed for those who are willing to improve English knowledge up to B2 level. At the end of the course students can enter Bachelor or Master study programmes at Mykolas Romeris University.

The purpose of the programme is to train specialists who have general philological knowledge about the structure and functioning of English and the culture of the country of the study language, who are able to communicate in English in work environment and can ensure smooth intercultural communication in the institutions which cooperate with foreign partners.

Italian Philology

“All roads lead to Rome!” This ancient saying is still relevant today. The Italian language, literature, and culture can open many diverse paths.

Students of Italian Philology will learn the Italian language professionally and become familiar with the history of Italy and the history of Italian literature and language. During their studies, they will develop skills to analyze and assess the Italian language, culture, and literary phenomena in a broader context. By understanding the country’s cultural and social specifics, graduates will also gain translation and cultural mediation competencies.

Classes are taught by highly qualified lecturers, most of whom are native speakers.

The programme is tailored to individual student needs, as it offers the opportunity to choose a certain number of subjects from other fields of study.

Graduates will be able to understand, create, and edit texts of various genres in the Italian language, choose appropriate language tools and styles, and communicate correctly and effectively in Italian (C1/C2) in various situations. They will be able to research a linguistic or literary problem, describe the results of the research in an academic text, present it publicly, and defend their opinion. They will be able to analyze Italy’s sociocultural context, identify the most prominent features of Italian culture, and evaluate it within a broader context.

Central and East European Languages and Cultures (Russian Studies)

This programme aims at training qualified critically and creatively thinking specialists who have:

  • solid ground in linguistics, literary studies, translation and intercultural communication;
  • excellent knowledge of Russian culture and history, understanding of the peculiarities of social media;
  • skills to create and analyse texts of various styles and to evaluate Russian language, literature and cultural phenomena in literary, scientific, socio-cultural geopolitical, and geo-cultural contexts of Europe and the world.

Studies with a perfect balance of language and literature also provide knowledge of other Central and East European countries’ literature and culture.

The programme is flexible and open to students’ interests – it allows them to choose Minor studies of any other language and its culture, to choose various subjects from different fields, or to direct their studies towards linguistics or literature studies.
A universal humanities education and specific practical skills open up a wide range of employment opportunities in cultural, educational, media and other fields.

The programme can be studied in English or Russian.

For beginners in Russian: The language of instruction is English, and learning the Russian language begins upon enrollment.

For advanced speakers: The language of instruction is Russian, and learning continues in an advanced-level group.

The Languages and Cultures of the Nordic and Baltic Sea Region program offers students a comprehensive study opportunity to delve into the languages and cultures of the region, including Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Russian, Latvian, Polish, or German. With a focus on both linguistic proficiency and cross-cultural understanding, students can specialize in literary and cultural studies or (socio)linguistics, exploring thematic courses that examine socio-cultural developments in Eastern, Central, and Northern Europe.

The programme offers students the solid written and spoken communication skills required for workplace success in Spanish (C1), as well as a knowledge of the fundamentals of Spanish linguistics, literature and the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. The curriculum includes a diverse range of courses that are designed to help students develop their language skills, including advanced writing, speaking and research skills needed to become successful.
