Working during the studies

International students have the right to work while studying in Lithuania as long as they are enrolled in a Higher Education Institution. Students are allowed to work 20 hours per week in accordance with the legislation of Lithuania. During the official university holidays, you can work 40 hours per week. Also, if you are a PhD student, you can work 40 hours per week year-round.

 

Working after the studies

  • If you are an EU citizen
    If you are a citizen of the European Union country, European Economic Community or Switzerland, you do not need to obtain permission to work in Lithuania.

 

  • If you are not an EU citizen
    If you are not a citizen of the European Union country and intend to work in Lithuania, you will have to complete some administrative steps before you can start working. If you obtained your last university degree in Lithuania, you don’t need to obtain a Work permit from the Lithuania Labor Exchange. However, some other requirements apply. Please check the website of the Migration Department.During the last year of learning or studying, students can apply for a temporary residence permit renewal for 6 additional months from the day when the studies are finished in order to look for a jobAfter graduating, you also have the possibility to apply for a temporary residence permit for 12 months to look for a job search and self-employment purposes.A work permit may be issued to a foreigner if there is no specialist in Lithuania meeting the employer’s qualification requirements.
