The newly adopted law might broaden foreign students’ work opportunities in Lithuania

During the last meeting of the spring session the Lithuanian Parliament (Lietuvos Respublikos Seimas) adopted the law on the legal status of foreigners in Lithuania.

Amongst the various points affecting foreigners, the law also contains a statement on the work status of foreign students.

The law establishes that foreign students studying in Lithuania will be exempt from the obligation of obtaining a work permit, allowing the person to work no more than 20 hours per week. Also, foreign students will be able to work from the first year of their study, rather than the second year, as it has been so far.

Given there will be no further changes, the law should take effect starting January 1st, 2017.
